For a country whose porn production doubles that of its American counterpart, one would think that its industry would be filled with endless lines of new talent waiting to jump in on the opportunity of (at least what most of us would consider) a life time.
However, that is not the case for Japans adult video industry, known as JAV, whose lack of male talent puts an entire industry at a peril and a handful of talented men under complete exhaustion.

For 37 year old Shimiken, a 19 year industry veteran known as the porn king of Japan, the insufficiency of male performers has left him, along with a few other, with the responsibility of maintaining Japan’s $20 billion porn industry afloat.

Over the span of his career Shimiken has slept with over 8,000 women for 7,500 movies. Yet, he has become worried by the gender ratios in the Japanese porn industry.

Current statistics show that there are only 70 male actors and 10,000 females. The ratios are heavily staggered.

Shimiken joked about how male Japanese porn actors were more endangered than the Bengali tiger.

In a 2015 interview with GQ magazine he stated, “Usually I sleep with two or three girls a day, so I have sex for about two hours every day,” he joked. “It’s my dream job — I’ve been doing this for 17 years and I never get bored of it. It beats working in an office. I’ll do this until I’m 100.”

“Mentally, men have become weaker, they’re less macho, less proactive about sex.”

With so many beautiful Japanese women crowding the industry the obvious question remains, what has led to such a large gender gap in the industry? Porn actress Yuko Shiraki believes that men have become herbivore men, a type of male that is less masculine as a result of a society that provides them with easy access to everything they need.

“Mentally, men have become weaker,” she said. “They’re less macho, less proactive about sex.”

Director Tohjiro agrees.

“I’ve been in this business for 27 years and you can see the increase in herbivore males,” he said on a film set in Tokyo. “Men aren’t hungry anymore. They’ve lost their desire. Everything’s on a plate for them.”

“It wasn’t like that for my generation,” he added. “If we got a banana or a pineapple we went crazy with joy. These days’ men don’t get excited by anything — the finest cookies or cakes. The same applies to sex and attitudes towards women and relationships. They just click on the Internet for it.”

There is a gleam of hope though, just this past month the production company
Tokyo Dreams offered five Singaporean men acting contracts after successfully completing an audition, which unsurprisingly enough only managed to garner 25 different prospects. Which only goes to show the magnitude of the crisis the JAV industry is facing and the amount of opportunity there is males determined make it in the business.
